American Water Expands Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs to Homeowners in Four States

Programs to be offered in communities in Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio

VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it is expanding the number of communities in which its Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs will be available to homeowners in Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Offered through American Water Resources, Inc., a subsidiary of American Water, the Water Line Protection and Sewer Line Protection Programs provide homeowners with comprehensive protection for leaks and breaks in water lines, as well as clogs or blockages in sewer on their property. These repairs are not typically covered by homeowners' insurance or their water or sewer service provider.

Through American Water Resources, American Water has been providing water line, sewer line and in-home plumbing protection programs to homeowners for more than ten years and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. The company has nearly 1 million customer contracts in 23 states. American Water Resources, Inc. has been selected by the New York City Water Board as the official service line protection provider for their homeowners. American Water Resources' Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs will be available to an estimated 600,000 homeowners throughout the City's five boroughs, making it the largest municipal partnered water and sewer line protection contract in the U.S.

"Many homeowners are unaware that they are responsible for making repairs to the water and sewer lines on their property until one of them breaks. So we are pleased to be able to inform more homeowners about this issue and to offer programs to help protect them from the high cost of those repairs," said Sharon Cameron, president of American Water Resources.

The Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs provide homeowners with protection for water and sewer line emergencies, including the dispatching of a local, licensed contractor for repairs, basic site restoration and 24-7 customer service. Water Line Protection starts at $5 per month and covers up to $5,000 in repairs. Sewer Line Protection starts at $9 per month and covers up to $8,000 in repairs.

Another benefit of enrollment in these programs is that homeowners don't need to go through the hassle of finding a qualified, trustworthy contractor to make what is often an emergency repair. American Water Resources establishes a network of local, contractors in the communities it serves to make expedient and effective repairs. As part of its expansion into more communities, the company is currently reviewing and selecting additional local, qualified plumbers for its contractor network.

Residents in the communities where this service will be offered will receive information in the mail. Additional information about the programs is available online at www.AWRUSA.com.

Separate from its residential programs, American Water Resources also extends its service line protection programs to municipalities through partnerships in the LineSaver® program. LineSaver is a solution for service line repairs that are neither the responsibility of a municipality's water department, nor covered by homeowners' insurance. At no cost to the municipality, the company's experts will fully manage LineSaver, and take care of all requirements for developing and implementing the program — from establishing a local contractor network and providing customer service, to educating the community about service line ownership and responsibility. LineSaver enables municipalities to participate in making a valuable service available in their communities without investment or staffing increases.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs approximately 7,000 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 15 million people in more than 30 states and parts of Canada.
